~an urgent opportunity to show vital international support for the #EndSARS protests~
open me, I'm important!
Hey everyone,
I’ve not done this before, but it’s really important! Thanks for opening this bonus email.
As you may have seen, on Tuesday, October 20 Nigeria’s government unleashed military forces on peaceful protestors in Lagos, killing and injuring unarmed citizens.
These citizens were protesting as part of a massive people’s movement challenging years of brutal and inhumane acts by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), including unlawful arrests, torture, extrajudicial killings, and more. To learn more about the horrific actions unfolding in Nigeria you can read more here or watch this powerful interview with Aderonke Ige of Nigerian-based NGO Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).
CAPPA is made up of a phenomenal group of organizers fighting for an end to corporate impunity. Many of us who write this newsletter have worked with them closely.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Nigeria is not happening in a vacuum, and uprisings continue to grow across the globe in defense of Black Lives. Our voices are even stronger when we stand together across continents in solidarity to demand an end to police brutality and for justice.
The organizers at CAPPA are calling for the International Criminal Court and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights to open an international inquiry into the killing and maiming of #EndSARS protestors. The world is watching what happens next in Nigeria and those responsible for the senseless suppression and violence of those working towards justice must be held accountable.
That’s why I’m reaching out to ask you to add your name to the following petition to stand in solidarity with CAPPA, the people of Nigeria, and the #EndSARS movement to demand justice. After you have signed, please share this call with any individuals or organizations you are affiliated with across the globe to amplify this demand. I’ve included some sample social media language below if that’s helpful. Please post on whatever social media networks you use.
CAPPA will be delivering this petition imminently and want to show the mass numbers of people across the globe who are demanding international action. Thank you for adding your name and standing with those calling for justice.
In solidarity,
Lena
