Good morning!
Welcome to Digestable, your mouthful of things happening in the world.
Today’s ferments:
Here’s what I’m reading this weekend:
Rebecca Solnit on revisiting Orwell, and why we need bread and roses. This concept emerged from early labor organizing, specifically among young women working in garment factory. They believed, and demanded to their employers through striking, writing, and marching, that wages should provide for bread (the necessities) and roses (that which makes life beautiful).
A deep dive on the long-term impacts of fossil fuel extraction and war in Iraq—a kind of coverage I’ve never read before about this place, which is so often boiled down to numeric measurements that ignore the people and ecosystems there.
Workers are demanding more humane treatment from bosses—an article that featured the below illustration, which I found enchanting (thanks DJ toMoR0 for sending!).

Happy New Year, friends! And what better way to celebrate the beginning of a new turn around the sun than with an engagement?
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly announced their engagement earlier this week, and the whole affair was extremely on brand for the two of them. But first, a little background on their love story!
Megan and MGK went public as a couple in early 2020 and the pair have been inseparable ever since. They gave an interview to GQ Magazine in November of last year and it was the most over-the-top, edgelords of the night shit ever. Dedicated followers of the couple will remember gems such as MGK saying their first kiss was just the two of them putting their lips in front of each other and breathing each other's breath, or Megan describing the first time they met each other, in which she remarked that MGK smelled like weed and he replied with "I am weed" before disappearing "like a ninja in a smoke bomb."
A lot of people were cringing at their public displays of affection in the last several months but that didn't deter Megan and MGK! These two crAaAaAaAzy kids have made it to the next step of their relationship and i'm fully bought into their love story.
"...two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love." -- are you guys reading this shit?! Think of the greatest romance poets you know. Pablo Neruda? Elizabeth Barrett Browning? None of their sonnets even comes close to the lyrical beauty that is Machine Gun Kelly describing the love he shares with Megan Fox.
And if that wasn't enough, Megan also shared on her Instagram that after she said yes to his proposal, the pair celebrated by drinking each other's blood.
I'm 96.8% certain that she was poking fun at the goth vampire vibes the couple tries hard to project to the public... but also, I fully believe they'd be wild enough to do something like that so I also wouldn't be surprised if she was being serious. Regardless, this is definitely the emo scene teen romance of my dreams and I can't wait to see how the wedding goes!
~Caro’s Tarot~
Hello!
You might know me as Caro’s Tarot. It’s been a while since we’ve met for a reading. We’ll be sure to fix that in the next couple weeks — plus, you need a New Year’s reading! But before we dive into all of the hopes and possibilities we have for this New Year, I wanted to share with you a hobby that is near and dear to my heart: photography. I started playing around and learning about photography since I was three, expertly learning what iso and aperture are by the age of 5….did I get ya? No, in reality I have been seriously into photography since the pandemic forced me to find something to regularly entertain myself with…aka in 2020. And, as it usually goes with those of us that have ADHD, I got reaaaalllly into it, and then…I stopped. Not until we moved back down here to Colombia, did I realize how much I was missing by not continuing to practice something that brought me so much joy. So I am super excited to share with you some wildlife photos I have captured while being down here!
I have the immense privilege of having family in places still rural enough for you to see some absolutely incredible wildlife. Some of my favorites are the Macaws included in the pictures below. Believe it or not these are wild birds that come outside of my aunt’s kitchen in the tropics do Santander, Colombia to eat peanuts…I mean, how incredible is that?
I will leave you with one final image: to capture many of these photos, we drove around the dirt road in the neighboring lands of the farm. I sat in the truck bed, camera at the ready, speaker on my side blasting El Cantante by Hector Lavoe. My dad’s best friend screams from the driver’s side window, “Miren arriba!” (“Look up!”). And as we turned our heads upwards towards the skies, there were two yellow bellied, deep blue Macaws flying in perfect unison over our heads, their long tails gracefully hanging down towards us…it was magic. In that moment I took a deep breath, and remembered I am living in a country, in a place, that inspired Gabriel Garcia Marquez to write of magical realism.
So please enjoy these beautiful remnants of the year we called 2021. The year wildlife spoke and inspired me more than humans have in the past 100 years (ok just kidding because I know many beautiful humans, I am just feeling in a sarcastic mood this Friday morning). Please enjoy looking at these as much as I enjoyed taking and editing them!
Wishing y’all a blessed start to the New Year!
Caro
Caro, that cow has the most beautiful face. Thanks for bringing the animals back to Digestable!
