Good morning!
Welcome to Issue 52.3 of Digestable, your thrice-weekly mouthful of real things happening in the world, minus alarmist pandemic news.
Today’s news, fermented:
In keeping with a theme (that started last week, in keeping with another theme of what is time), here’s an article about the nightlife we crave: What is life without burlesque?
As a baby queer in New York, burlesque shows were some of the first places I saw people’s real, gender-bendy bodies in the flesh. Less policed than TV and more intimate than a concert, every burlesque show is of-its-place, special in its way. This article celebrates that.
Another fun tidbit along those lines is this piece about trans Jews finding home on farms, written by someone who used to be my boss on a farm and who I trained in ‘how to not misgender your colleagues 101.’ It’s a real thrill to see that person writing about this thing.
If you’re interested in some ~things to do~ today, give your members of Congress a call to ask that they co-sponsor the WATER Act. This is, imho, a pretty badass infrastructure package—it’ll fix broken water mains, keep our drinking water safe and bills affordable. My humble opinion aside, 93% of voters believe fixing America’s outdated and unsafe drinking water systems should be a top priority for President Biden’s economic recovery plan.
Here are numbers to call and an email to send to your friends, asking them if they can take this little action as well. Feel free to post on social media about it as well using this toolkit and some graphics.
If you’d like to support the families of the victims of Atlanta’s horrific hate crime last week, you can do so here. Last but not least, support the FANG bail fund, which is freeing people from prisons across Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Here’s a mystery space visitor, recently reimagined as an orange pancake.
